Georgia Local Section

[American Industrial hygiene Association] [September, 1999]

Quarterly Newsletter - Webpage Edition

Presidents Message, Eva Ewing, CIH

Scott Weiner, our Local Section Secretary, is putting together an excellent program for our fall meeting on October 25th. The topic, Emerging Health and Safety Issues for the Next Millennium, seems appropriate for our last local section meeting of the century! The presentations will not only provide technical information, but also stimulate our thinking as we consider the changing roles for industrial hygienists now, and in the future. Topics will include: the aging work force and cumulative trauma, workplace violence, advances in training, hearing loss, pregnancy and reproductive health, and bioterrorism.

This all day meeting with lunch will be held at the Johns Creek Ciba Vision facility. See the enclosed agenda for directions. Based on past history, 1 CM point will be awarded for the program. We hope to see you there and encourage your evolvement. Don't delay until the next millennium to attend a local section meeting!

Our dates for future meetings. Please mark your calendars as follows:

We've put our heads together and developed some ideas for the Fall that we think you will find exciting. Topical areas include:

Last newsletter for some!

Check the address used to mail your newsletter. Does it say, "LAST ISSUE UNTIL 99 DUES PAID?" We currently have about 80 members on the GLS mailing list who have not renewed their membership. Many of these names are for people who have moved from Georgia or who have elected to drop their membership. Those of you who just forgot will need to reactivate your membership. What's New?

An ASSE Professional Development Conference, to be hosted by Georgia ASSE Chapters in Savannah, Augusta, and Atlanta, along with the Georgia Local Section, will be held in Augusta, Ga, May 8-9, 2000, at the Radisson Riverfront Hotel. The theme of the Conference is Safety, Its Your Business. Proceeds from the event will be rolled back to the Georgia ASSE Chapters and the GLS.

A couple of new pages posted on the NIOSH website worth reviewing include: The NIOSH Alert on management of hazardous energy (Lock-Out/ Tag-Out). This Publication (99-110) is found at: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/99-110.html

The document contains a review of five case studies giving examples of uncontrolled kinetic, electrical, potential, and thermal energy.

While you're visiting the NIOSH site, check out their new page on noise induced hearing loss. This page has links to many other hearing conservation resources including a pretty neat page that lets you guess how loud different workplace noises are. The page address is: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/noise.html.

I found the speech given by OSHA Director Charles Jeffress at the June 99 ASSE Professional Development Conference interesting. If you would like to read his presentation, visit the OSHA Web site. The speech is posted at URL:
