The time has come again for a new round of officers for the Georgia Local Section of the AIHA. Enclosed with this newsletter is the ballot for our election of officers. Please take the time to complete the ballot and mail it to Dave Beem, our President-Elect. He will make the announcement of our new officers at Tuesday's luncheon at the April PDC. Help us welcome our National President, Steven Levine, along with our new board at this luncheon. Dr. Levine has graciously volunteered to speak to our AIHA/ASSE PDC and participate in a panel discussion afterwards. Please mark your calendars to hear Dr. Levine and attend the technical seminar. The PDC on April 23 and 24 replaces our normal vendor spring meeting and will provide additional opportunities to hear a variety of speakers. We anticipate 1.5 Certification Maintenance points will be awarded by ABIH for this PDC. The deadline for your discount registration ($125) is April 1. Credit cards are accepted. Details are available on the Georgia Local Section Web site. Don't miss it.
We are putting the final touches on the Operations Manual for the local section and hope to have it completed soon. It will be made available on our website and we will send a notification out to our members when we place it on the Web. Hard copies will also be available upon request
I also want to express my thanks to the present board members: Dave Beem, Michelle Pickard, Harold Hobbs, Mark Demyanek, Peter Kowalski and especially Stan Salisbury for all their efforts this past year. They have done an excellent job and served the local section well. I know Dave Beem will do an outstanding job in the 2001/2002 time frame and hope you will give him the support that I have received from the entire section. I have thoroughly enjoyed working for you and meeting new people throughout the year that have a real interest in the welfare of our working population. It is great to know we have such dedicated individuals. Through this section we can network with them and share in their knowledge.
Thanks again
Brenda Southerland
Della Ridley joined AIHA and the Ga Local Section in 1976, after going to
work as an industrial hygiene chemist at the Environmental Health Lab in
Macon, GA. In 1980, she moved to Marietta for an industrial hygiene position at the Lockheed
Georgia Co. (now Lockheed-Martin). While at Lockheed, she established the environmental
compliance program and obtained one of the first RCRA permits issued. She was certified by
ABIH in 1982, and as a CSP in 1990. Della joined Safety-Kleen in 1992, as a regional manager
responsible for environmental, health, and safety compliance at thirty-eight hazardous waste
storage facilities in the southeast. Last year she accepted the position of Health, Safety, &
Environmental Manager at Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in Marietta.
Della and her husband Jerome live in Kennesaw. Jerome is employed by the Fulton County School System, where he is responsible for various environmental programs, including asbestos management. When not working, they enjoy motorcycling and boating.
Lisa Delaney is one of the newest members of the Ga Local Section,
having joined in January this year. She is a 1999 graduate of the
Environmental and Industrial Hygiene program at the University of
Cincinnati. While in school, she did a 1-year internship with General
Electric Aircraft Engines. After graduation, she received an Association
of Teachers of Preventive Medicine fellowship in the NIOSH health
hazard evaluation program in Cincinnati, Ohio. A year later she was
transferred to the NIOSH Atlanta Field Office to complete the second year of her fellowship.
At the AIHCE 2000 conference, Lisa presented her thesis work in a platform presentation titled, "Determination of Known Exhalation Valve Damage Using Negative Pressure User Seal Check Methods on Full Face Respirators." She will present a poster at this year's conference on her work with health care workers' exposures to NOx during inhaled nitric oxide therapy. Lisa has been a member of AIHA since 1999. In her free time, she is busily planning for her upcoming July wedding.
On March 20, President Bush signed the Joint Resolution of Disapproval, officially overturning the ergonomics standard. OSHA Region IV representatives Sven Rundman and Jim Drake were scheduled to participate in a panel discussion at next months ASSE/AIHA PDC. We were recently notified that OSHA's National Office has issued instructions to its staff to cancel all speaking engagements related to OSHA's newest rules on ergonomics, recordkeeping, needle sticks, and steel erection.
We are pleased to announce that Pat Tyson, Board Chairman for the National Safety Council, and Aaron Trippler, AIHA Director of Government Affairs, have graciously agreed to participate in the Current Issues in Safety and Health Panel Discussion scheduled at the PDC on Tuesday afternoon, April 24.

The "Other Links" page has recently been updated. All links have been tested and verified. One link not working was the US Army IH Home Page. This page contained postings of current and past issues of the Army IH Regulatory Summary. The GLS has confirmed that this page is being redesigned and for the time being, regulatory summaries are only available through an e-mail subscription. Visitors to the GLS Web site's "News" page will find links to these summaries which are now being temporarily stored on our Web server.
