President's MessageRich DeLuca, CIHA Fresh StartWOW!! I can’t believe it is already 2004! Another year gone by! Thank you for your support of the Georgia Local Section. This upcoming year is going to be a great one, as we serve as host for the AIHce National Conference to be held in Atlanta from May 8-13, 2004. Please be certain to respond to the requests for assistance as we get down the home stretch. Many hands make light work!! Lots of items to discuss, so I’ll be brief. Fall MeetingProbably the best turn out for a meeting in recent past history. Close to 70 people showed up for the meeting. Home Depot and Diedre Bennett were excellent hosts, opening up the meeting and eating facilities to accommodate the Georgia Local Section. Presentations were spirited, as evidenced by the give and take after the presentation. Peter Farina, supported by Brenda Poole, put a whole new meaning to the term “investigative industrial hygiene”. Watch for the story to be a future CSI episode. The Winter Meeting and Vendors DayThe winter meeting is shaping up nicely. In addition to Vendor’s day, where we will be exposed to the latest and greatest EHS equipment and services offerings, we plan to have a number of outside speakers. Franz Schneider, President of Humantech, Ann Arbor Michigan will gives us a 90 minute overview regarding ergonomics. His PDC’s at the National AIHCE (in which you have to pay mucho $$$$ to attend) are annually one of the most popular offerings at the Conference. As many may know, Humantech, is the nation’s largest workplace ergonomics consulting firm. Human Performance Ergonomics™ is Humantech's proven and unique approach to effective, efficient, and sustainable ergonomics programs. Their clients achieve dramatic improvements in productivity and profitability while accelerating health and safety excellence. It is certain that you will gain from this presentation. Jennifer Boyer from the AIHA National office will be present to share with us recently concluded training events for local section officers and give some insight regarding how the National office operates. All of the coordinators will have an opportunity to talk about their activities associated with the National Conference. Bruce Karas from Coca Cola will bring us up to date on ABIH and certification. Drew Peake will give a talk regarding "Forensic Engineering Analysis of Workplace Exposure to Airborne Contaminants". Kevin H.Dunn, CIH - Engineering Control Options for House Boat Exhaust Generation. All in all, this should be another great meeting. Please plan to attend. No Host Cocktail Hour- After the MeetingHow about planning to get together for a no- host cocktail hour after the meeting? This will provide an opportunity for the Conference Coordinators to discuss their plans for the upcoming national conference, or just provide an opportunity for folks to chat. Location to be announced at the meeting, but it will be at one of the commercial establishments within the Cobb Galleria. Pre RegistrationPre registration helps us plan, particularly regarding meals and seating. If you are going, please take the time to pre register and be eligible for a gift certificate. The drawing for this meeting will be for a Gift Certificate to Maddy's BBQ and Blues in Decatur, GA. Pay your dues!!!If you can’t come to the meeting, please send a Check to Ryan Langton for the annual $10 dues. Do it now so you don’t forget! Getting the Students InvolvedAn invitation was made to Dr. Phil William’s students at UGA inviting them to attend this upcoming meeting free of charge. If you are aware of Students at Georgia Tech or Emory that may want to attend, please let me know. We would be glad to accommodate students at this or future meetings. We anticipate two UGA student presentations will be made at our April meeting. Thank you for your support. Let’s make 2004 a banner year for the Georgia Local Section!!! Start thinking about nominations (or self nominations) for upcoming officers…elections will be here before you know it! National Conference Coordinators Gear Up for the “Big Event”As we enter 2004, planning for the National Conference will intensify. The following people have volunteered to lead the activities in theses areas. Please give them a call to share ideas or volunteer. At the January 30 th meeting, each will be providing us an update as to where they are in the process and will advise of their resource needs. See page 3 for more details. AIHA-GLS Fall MeetingThe AIHA-GLS fall meeting took place on October 3rd at The Home Depot Store Support Center. Topics included The Home Depot’s EHS program, office ergonomics, mold remediation and inspection, web based training and an accident investigation case study. Turn out was especially encouraging, the largest ever, with nearly 70 health and safety professionals attending. Evaluations of the meeting were also very positive. All six rated categories averaged between 1 and 1.4, with 1 being an exceptional rating. Further topics included the upcoming national AIHC&E in May and speakers for our next GLS meeting. Bryce Bennett To-Do: Reflect on Your Past Year’s AccomplishmentsWhat worked? What didn’t? What moved you closer to your goals? What held you back? What should you have done differently? What did you learn that you can apply to 2004? What specific steps are you committed to take that will make your life dramatically better than it is today? If you can’t schedule at least one full day planning how you want your life to look 12 months from now, you’re likely to repeat your past mistakes and move at a snail’s pace toward your goals. Ask yourself this question: “Have I taken as much time to plan my life as I did my last vacation?” The answer may surprise you… help put things into perspective… and open your eyes to the “reason-why” of your present situation. Technical Tours are officially on the AIHCE Calendar! The tours are official…they showed up in print! The recent release of the Advance Registration Form lists our Technical Tours planned for the 2004 AIHCE in Atlanta. Technical Tour coordination was our first planning deadline as hosts of the 2004 AIHCE. We met the challenge head on and produced six outstanding tour sites for participating industrial hygienists and safety professionals to visit. The deadline would not have been met without the help of our local section members who so graciously volunteered their time and locations.
We extend a VERY SPECIAL THANKS to them for their efforts. Our volunteering members continue to keep us on the path to success! Leah S. Oglesby Opening CeremonyAIHCE Opening Ceremony This activity will feature a range of
